In a loaded system in Baltimore, Samuel Basallo has managed to climb to the top of many Orioles prospect rankings. The 20 year old backstop entered the org at just 16 years old, and has done nothing but hit at a high level since. He hit his first slump at the end of 2024 during his first stint at Triple-A Norfolk, so it will be interesting to see how he adjusts in 2025. He’s obviously blocked by Adley Rutschman at the big league level, so there will be no need to rush him through Triple-A aside from a need to fill a spot due to injury. There is question on whether or not he will stick as a catcher due to his size, but he does move well and has a great arm behind the plate. If he has to move to first base, the bat should be good enough to keep him there. If the glove does remain good enough to stick at catcher, you’re talking about a ceiling of top three catcher in the game given the bat clicks.
