In a loaded Chicago Cubs farm system, Ballasteros comes in ranked fourth in the organization and is Chicago’s top catching prospect. While there are questions surrounding his future at the catching position, there’s no doubt that what Ballasteros lacks in defensive prowess, he makes up for at the dish. Because of his advanced hit tool, Ballasteros was able to make it as high as Triple-A Iowa at just the age of 20 where he hit ten home runs over 285 plate appearances. Throughout his entire minor league career, Ballasteros has displayed an ability to put the ball in play at an above-average rate, as well as make consistent hard contact. He will have to continue to hit at a high level to earn a spot on the big league roster as he provides little to none on the bases and is still a long way from being a Major League catcher defensively. Regardless, Ballasteros is coming off of his second straight Cubs Minor League Player of the Year award, and could be in a Cubs uniform sometime this season.
