Matt Shaw is one of the few prospects on my top 50 list that will actually be battling for a big league roster spot during spring training. The Cubs need a third baseman at the moment, and he is in fact projected by Fangraph’s Roster Resource to win that job come opening day. The 2023 first rounder has given the Cubs every reason to hand him the job. In his two professional seasons thus far, Shaw has sported and OPS north of .850 and a wRC+ north of 140 across five different levels. On top of that, he doesn’t have a K% over 20.0 at any of his stops in the minors thus far. Aside from the above average hit tool, Shaw should be a perennial 30+ stolen base threat if he continues to get on base at the same clip he has since entering the Cubs system. That’s not very common for an everyday third baseman - which Shaw is not, as you can plug him in at either shortstop or second base where he has spent a lot of time in college and pro ball. Shaw is definitely a name that should be on plenty of preseason National League Rookie of the Year power rankings.
