Following a down year in 2023, the top shortstop in Boston’s system picked it back up in Double-A Portland. Through improved contact rates and a more patient approach, Mayer managed to drop his K% by over six points while raising his BB% which led to a huge increase in OBP. He earned a promotion to Triple-A Worcester, but never saw the field due to injury. He should open his 2025 campaign there before likely making his debut in Boston this year. There’s a lot of promise in the bat, but Mayer has really yet to put it all together. If he does, he can potentially be a 30+ home run hitter. To this point however, he has yet to hit 15 home runs in a full season. While he’s not going to provide a whole lot on the base paths, his glove is good enough to get him everyday reps at the big league level when the time comes. Given Trevor Story’s track record of injuries since his move to Boston, the Red Sox might see some combination of Kristian Campbell and Mayer at shortstop this year.
