Leodalis De Vries is yet another young, flashy shortstop that finds himself ranked among the top prospects in baseball. The Padres number one prospect was an international signee out of the Dominican Republic in last year’s international signing class and doesn’t turn 19 until October. At just 17 years old, De Vries passed up both the Dominican Summer League and the Complex League as the Padres sent him right to Low-A Lake Elsinore where he managed to hit 11 home runs on his way to an .803 OPS. He was one of just two shortstops under the age of 18 to reach Low-A in 2024. He can hit from both sides of the plate and displays a patient approach that is well beyond his years. Defensively, De Vries isn’t elite by any means, but it appears as if the Padres plan to keep him there for the time being to see if he can develop into a big league level defender. He certainly has a lot of time to marinate in the minor leagues and may just start shooting through San Diego’s system if he continues on his current trajectory.
