In his age 19-20 season, McGonigle was one of the top risers in Minor League Baseball. Following the 2023 draft where McGonigle was selected 37th overall, the Tigers number three ranked prospect got 93 plate appearances at the complex league and Low-A Lakeland where he posted a slash line of .315/.452/.411. Following his impressive pro debut, McGonigle opened 2024 in Lakeland once again and was promoted to High-A West Michigan halfway through the season. Unfortunately, a hamate bone fracture prematurely ended McGonigle’s season, but it was still impressive nonetheless. McGonigle’s .309 batting average, .853 OPS, and 144 wRC+ all ranked within the top ten among all Tigers minor league hitters. The most impressive part of McGonigle’s game is his elite hit tool. He has managed to walk more than he has struck out at each stop of the minors by a wide margin, posting a career BB/K of 1.68. McGonigle will always be a hit-over-power hitter but does hit the ball harder than your typical contact guy, which gives him some upside in the power department. He’s a pretty average defender at second base where he seemingly will spend his career and also has flashed above-average speed which can potentially result in 20+ stolen bases at the big league level.
