Prior to a hamstring injury during the opening weekend of college baseball in 2024 that sidelined Wetherholt for 2 months, the Cardinals top prospect was the consensus number one favorite for the draft headed into the 2024 season. The Cardinals got a steal with Wetherholt at seventh overall as he had one of the purest hit tools in the 2024 draft class. In his sophomore year he won Big 12 Player of the Year, backed by a .449 batting average which led all Division-1 hitters. Despite the nagging hamstring, Wetherholt still managed to post a 1.061 OPS in 2024. He began his professional journey at Low-A Palm Beach and picked right back up where he left off, putting up a .295 AVG and a .407 OBP while walking more than he struck out over 126 plate appearances. On the bases, Wetherholt can be a threat as well. He only stole six bags in his final year at West Virginia due to the hamstring injury, but stole 36 in 44 attempts the year prior. Defensively, it looks like he has what it takes to play shortstop at the big league level, but has more recently played second and third at an above average level if he needed to move over.
