While my top 50 prospects consists of a lot of players that have risen among prospect rankings over the past year, Ethan Salas is one of the players that has unfortunately dropped by a fair amount. Salas came into the 2024 season as a consensus top 10 prospect but dropped due to a poor season offensively. However, it’s important to note that Salas is still one of the youngest prospects in the game despite now having two full seasons under his belt. Salas was in Double-A San Antonio in 2023 at only 16 years old. While Salas struggled offensively in 2024, his elite glove behind the plate is what will keep his name relevant for at least the next couple of years. Catching is a slow grind to becoming great defensively, but it is apparent that Salas was gifted naturally to play the position. From framing, to blocking, and to controlling the running game, Salas does not have a whole lot of weaknesses defensively. The bat will obviously need to make some improvements if he is to continue to climb San Diego’s system, and it did show some promise in the second half of the season. It also did look a lot better in his 92 plate appearance sample size at the Arizona Fall League where he posted a .327 OBP and a .424 SLG.
