Although his first taste of the big leagues was nothing to be desired, there’s still a lot of reason to believe Coby Mayo can be a star. Since entering Baltimore’s system in 2020, no other active Oriole minor leaguer has hit more home runs than Mayo (82). Mayo has some of the best raw power in this crop of prospects and has slugged with the best of them at each of his stops along the way. As it is with most power hitters, strikeouts are Mayo’s main concern at the dish as his 47.8 K% stuck out like a sore thumb during his short stint in the big leagues in 2024. However, he doesn’t chase a lot which has led to above average walk rates, which should combat the high strikeout numbers. If he’s putting enough bat on the ball in the meantime, the ball will start flying. Defensively, Mayo is a question mark at third base because of his poor accuracy, but he does have one of the best infield arms in baseball. If he can corral the accuracy, he can be one of the better defenders at third base. If not, he’s likely to end up at first for the long haul.
